In this new global age our prosperity is indivisible. In order for growth to be sustained it must be shared and trade must once again become an engine of growth. This time of financial crisis is no time to walk away from our commitment to the world's poorest. - Gordon Brown, Prime Minister

Welcome to world trade week uk 2009

A week-long event to highlight the importance of global trade in creating jobs and growth.

World Trade Week UK will highlight the importance of global trade in creating jobs and growth. Through a series of events, reports and other activities, it will help showcase the success of the UK as a trading nation and the importance of global trade to reducing global poverty.

In the current economic climate, it is particularly important that we maximise opportunities for global trade and promote the benefits of open markets to protect our shared economic future. The Week is a joint initiative from the Departments for International Development (DFID) and Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

UK Trade and Development Policy Report (8 June 2009) takes a five-year horizon, drawing out our dual focus: ensuring benefits for UK and European Union (EU) businesses and consumers; and maximising the contribution that trade can make to reducing poverty. Download the report here.

As part of the first UK World Trade Week, the UK Government’s Trade Policy Unit (Department for International Development/Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) asked the Foresight Horizon Scanning Centre (Government Office for Science) to explore the possible future courses of world trade. The Centre has developed the four contrasting scenarios that are presented here, which illustrate how world trade might develop between now and 2020. Download the report here.
